Aqua Culture

Welcome to the World of Aquaponics

Interested in Aquaponics? Tired of maintaining a fish tank? Take a look at our setup on a fish tank that maintains itself. All you have to do is add food and water and we can show you how. Even if adding food and water is too much then you can invest in some awesome technology and it will feed the fish and add water to the tank. We have not found a good working auto feeder yet. Let us know if you find one. Seems like they are all cheaply made and I somehow have to feed the fish manually. But I like feeding the fish, it’s the best part about owning them.

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics (/ˈækwəˈpɒnɪks/) refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish, or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.

Tank Specifications:

55g Top Fin Tank Aquarium Starter Kit (12.75″L x 48.25″W x 20.187″H)

2500 Lumen BeamsWork EA Full Spectrum LED with Extendable Timer

Marineland Magnaflow 220 Canister Filter

Fluval AquaClear 70 Power Filter

The Setup:

We stumbled upon aquaponics by accident. It all started with a fish tank. We were just thinking one day, with our lazy human brain, wouldn’t it be cool if the fish tank maintained itself? Similar to larger aquatic ecosystems, such as lakes, rivers, and even the ocean. No more water changes, glass scrubbing, or restocking fish. So how do we pull it off? Even an aquarium with a filter requires water changes. Take a look at our aquaponics project in which we create a small aquatic ecosystem.

What is an Ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system. These biotic and abiotic components are linked together through nutrient cycles and energy flows.

We used to think that fish were some of the more simple pets to own. The desire to eliminate water changes leads us to a scientific breakthrough. So why do we need to perform water changes? Well, if you do not change the water of a fish tank, eventually all of the dirt, poop, leftover food, and ammonia build up inside the tank and will eventually kill the fish. Changing the water removes waste. Many fish keepers are familiar with the Nitrogen Cycle. But you don’t want to change all of the water. The aged water also contains bacteria that are beneficial for the fish. If you have a filter then no worries, most of the bacteria will be housed there, that’s why many people do not clean their filters.

So long story short, the fish eat their food, which gets broken down into fish waste (ammonia). The build-up of ammonia will kill the fish. Scavengers such as snails and shrimp, break down the fish waste into even smaller forms of ammonia. The ammonia is then broken down by beneficial bacteria, usually housed inside a filter. The bacteria convert the ammonia into nitrites, which is still toxic for the fish, but less harmful than ammonia. Another group of bacteria converts the nitrites into nitrates, which is still harmful to the fish, but a lot less toxic than the prior forms. This is usually the end of the road for hobbyists, as the nitrates are removed by doing water changes. But… That is not the only way to remove nitrates.

Often overlooked, plants help maintain the water quality as well. By adding aquatic plants we can stabilize the water a bit. Plants absorb nutrients from the water such as ammonia, nitrates, iron, phosphorus, as well as other chemicals added to the water. But not just any plant, we need fast-growing plants. The plants absorb nitrates as they grow. Slow growing plants will clean up slower. So we decided to stock the tank with as many fast-growing plants possible. We stocked with floating plants because they absorb chemicals the fastest as they have constant access to carbon dioxide (can limit plant growth in aquatic species). The plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen for the fish. Next, we added carpeting plants, which lay down their roots into the soil. These plants help keep the soil clean. We decided to use a sand substrate as the soil to help establish beneficial bacteria. Lastly, we added a pothos or peace lily to the HOB filter. The filter filtrates chemically, biologically, and mechanically. The buildup of waste in the filter makes a perfect recipe for the ideal growth of the plant. These plants grow above the water level and have nutrients in both the water and the air (carbon dioxide). Another plant material that is often overlooked is algae. We placed the aquarium in a south-facing window, this gives the plants a secondary source of light it’s too much light. This recipe leads to algae growth, which many scavengers will gladly eat as food.

Alright so now we have our nitrogen cycle completed. We set our LED lights on a timer for automatic day and night mode. Many of the inhabitants will do fine on the algae and fish waste the plants add another food source for the fish. With all the extra food, you can cut back on feedings. We decided to add freshwater clams to the mix, adding another biological filter. And tada! Just like that, we have created an ecosystem that does not require water changes. Since I pump carbon dioxide and air into the water column, the gases tend to change the PH of the water to be more acidic. This is countered by using a PH buffer, we like to keep the water neutral. The PH buffer is only needed when dosing with carbon dioxide, the PH balances at 7.4 otherwise. So we eliminated water changes… well almost. There is still an issue of evaporation. Unless you want to invest in an auto top off system, you will need to add water to the fish tank periodically.

Nature on the Uprise

Nature is on the uprise here at Nature’s Uprise. We have several plants available for purchase. We studied plants to learn about their growth, health benefits, filtration, and special abilities. We originally developed an interest in plants from the fish keeping hobby. I wanted to build a fish tank that could sustain itself, similar to a lake, without human intervention. Many plants filter out the air and water. Thanks to the many You-tubers in the fish-keeping hobby that was able to provide feedback on how the plant grows and impacts the health of the water. Not only that but the plants also produce oxygen for the fish to breathe. We plan to go more into details about our plants in the future. In the meantime, check out what’s available in our online store. The more a person buys from our online store the cleaner and greener our planet becomes.

Did you know that plants communicate with one another? They do this by releasing chemicals sometimes know as allelopathy. Plants communicate telepathically and can either help or prevent one another from growing. They try communicating with humans with visual indicators such as turning yellow or brown when it needs water, sunlight, is getting too much sun, or being attacked by insects.

Plants provide all the nutrients and homing materials any living organisms will ever need, right? It’s almost like the plants were placed on Earth just for us to live off of. They provide shelter, material for shelter, some can relax the mind, as a food source, health care products, and medicine. The list goes on. So what’s all this stuff about money? Why do people need money all the time? What is money? It’s made out of plant material, right? Facts say 25 % linen and 75 % cotton. Both of which are plant materials used very commonly to make clothing. Imagine using a piece of clothing to pay for something. Money does grow from trees. Most of the money we see is virtual in today’s society anyways. We can show you how to make money from the Money Tree plant. Stay tuned for our future guides.

Air Purifying Plants

Fast Growing Aquatic Plants

Fragrant and Healing Plants

Plants have been on the planet for centuries. Long before the humans came around that’s for sure. Some even argue that they were one of the first living organisms to exists. And there is a good reason why. Check out ways that Plant lives can add to your own life. Our members work together so when we invest with our planet, we invest in the bank. Grow a Money Tree with us. We grow plants and as they grow and duplicate, we sell them. Many of the plants we have are fast-growing or have some type of ability such as good luck from the bamboo plants. Some plants are capable of purifying the air and getting rid of unwanted chemicals in your home. Stay tuned and we will reveal everything we know about them.

According to Suzanne Simard (forest ecologist) states that trees can communicate with one another via the fungal networks in their roots. They can warn each other about pathogens, forest fires, and more. They can also communicate in gene expression, nutrient availability, etc with mycorhyzzal fungi on the roots.

We don’t use paper over here at Nature’s Uprise. Everything is done electronically and on the computer. Another way that we save on company costs but saving the trees instead. It can take up to 30 years for a tree to grow full size. Trees provide the very necessities of life itself. Trees remove pollution from the atmosphere, improving air quality and human health. They clean protect our drinking water, create healthy communities, and feed the human soul. We are #TEAMTREES with our buddies at Arbor Day Foundation. The Arbor Day Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit conservation and education organization. A million members, donors, and partners support our programs to make our world greener and healthier. Become a member of the Arbor Day Foundation and receive 10 free trees as well as tree nursery discounts. So that would be a great opportunity if you own a home to get the fragrantly smelling Orange Tree. When the flowers bloom, it emits a strong smell that also helps relax a person. Lavender can relax a person as well. They help raise money to put trees in the hands of homeowners affected by natural disasters or to plant trees in a forest in great need. Besides some people just want a fragrant home without having to continuously purchase oils, or fresheners, or incense, or candles.

We are currently offering the option to receive plants and seeds in the mail for $20/month. The plants are selected from both aquatic and plants that filter the air. You can receive something new in the mail every month as a surprise. It’s a great opportunity to learn about mother nature. Monthly plants are customizable and may grow into many more. Feel free to send back the unwanted plant or cuttings or seeds. Don’t worry we will handle the rehoming process and recycling part from there. If you are unsure how to grow the plant that you receive in the mail, please contact us and we will be more than happy to explain. The good part is if the plants grow too fast for you, then you can cut it and sell the cutting or sprouts online for a little profit. One of my most popular selling plants is called Devil’s Ivy or Pothos. That plant grows pretty quickly and is very easy to care for. If left uncontrolled it will start winning and taking over every space possible. Many hobbyists like the pothos to help reduce nitrates in their fish tanks. Never throw away your plant! Feel free to contact us if you need advice on what to do. Join our Patreon to get access to our discord chat. The chat is intended as a place where people can get their questions about plants answered, similar to a forum.

Uh oh! Looks like you found our blog. We are not hiding this from you, I promise. We want you to see our blog. We want it to be perfect, but we never exactly created a blog before. And by we, I mean that I have not created a blog before. Who am I? I never wanted to reveal my identity or that I was the owner of Nature’s Uprise. I wanted Nature’s Uprise to take on a life of its own independently from myself and my achievements. But for curiosities’ sake, I am Jamal Muwwakkil and friends. Jamal Muwwakkil is the owner and the originator of Nature’s Uprise. He was an honor and AP student and studied Software Engineering and Arizona State University. There are others involved but do not take on a full role within Nature’s Uprise.

Jamal Muwwakkil

Since I will be the main blogger I thought maybe I’d start with an introduction. I grew up on computers, probably my entire generation has. I was learning how to use the internet before it became what it is: essential. Can you imagine? There once was a time before electricity and the internet. Now the internet is practically everywhere that we go. Growing up as a gamer I got a chance to use the internet to meet people from all over the world and learn new skills from them. A lot of the skills that gamers had were a lot of the same skills that hackers, programmers, and computer engineers alike all had in common. Instead of learning how to use the computer from school, most schools in my time thought the internet was just for entertainment. By the time I got into high school, several schools started using the internet for academic research and became the library replacement for information. Fast forward to 2020, now everything is on the internet. Things appear on the internet a lot faster than they do in books. I don’t think universities had this in mind, as a lot of our education and knowledge are starting to come from the internet. Instead of a person having to spend 4 years going to school to learn something, they could do their research online and probably learn it much faster. It would be interesting to see how to universities change themselves to accommodate this wonderful achievement. With the newer generations learning much faster than the previous who knows what things we will accomplish. With the internet, we finally have a way to unify the entire planet and get on the same page. We no longer have to worry about third parties, governments, or social groups spreading false information or destroying ancient text that outlines history. Sure there is false information out there still, but we are all getting the same information and can sort it out by comparing multiple websites. As an AP honors student, along with going to private schools and attending programs like Upward Bound, I spent a lot of time researching and writing academic essays that I cannot be easily fooled by false content. Plus with social media, we have access to some of the world’s most intelligent people at our fingertips. I practically am the internet at this point. If using the internet was a skill I’d have a Master’s Degree in it. I needed to create a website where not only people could purchase my products, but also benefit from my services. I wanted to create not only an online store but an online community where students, aka, nerds like me could gather to express themselves within the science and technology world. Our online community could support itself. If there is something that we want, we can obtain it with internet money. We offer our finding information to the public. We want to be transparent in how we do business and earn money. We will continue to update our funding page as things change over time.

A contribution to us is a contribution to the next generation of life. We are passionate about scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical areas that support and sustain life on Earth. Our mission is to inspire individuals with science and technology while offering affordable options. We like the money of course, but primarily we strive to add support to the economic, educational, and social well-being of families, children, and communities without needlessly harming the environment in the process. We are a business. But we are also individuals. We are not a non-profit organization but offer limited funding and awareness to some with similar objectives. Some or all of the donations and sales for online products generate revenue large enough to not only sustain itself but grow into something bigger. We work together with everyone, especially our members. We offer technologically convenient services (such as tutoring), discounted products, research and counseling services, and limited need-based solutions that could enhance the life of affected communities. We focus on supplementing education as it goes hand in hand with helping alleviate some of the barriers within the education system.

We welcome everyone to Nature’s Uprise the Company and the Blog. The blog is the official voice of the company. If we haven’t told you before we are on the Uprise. We are taking every opportunity that we can to monetize our platform and utilize the funds to create an uplifting and helpful environment where students who are fascinated with science and technology can enjoy interesting content. We are taking over the internet and will help lead the next generation to success. We want to create a very educational atmosphere. Whether you sign up for a tutoring session or purchase a plant from us, we want to teach you something. We want to inspire people to learn more about science and technology for the betterment of our planet. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could live up to 500 years? Why can’t we? We will explore topics such as this and drive a push towards certain discoveries and new technological advances. We students coming together as one to help educate one another.

First of all, we would like to thank you for visiting our website and at least making it down to this paragraph.
