10 things that I do to be more eco-friendly

Yesterday was June 5th – the World Environment Day. It is the day when many people plant a sapling to celebrate the importance of the day. But I have often wondered if the same people will remember to water the sapling and ensure that it survives afterwards.

Today, I thought of sharing a few little things that I do to be more eco-friendly.

  1. I am a stickler for conserving water. Skipping the shower in favour of a bucket can save a lot of water. Turning off the tap while brushing, washing your hands, or doing the dishes can save a lot of water too.
  2. I often try to upcycle products into something useful wherever possible. They mostly end up looking like quirky decor pieces but hey, that counts as re-use!
  3. I carry multiple cloth bags in my vehicles so that I don’t have to rely on plastic bags every time I shop!
  4. I don’t litter. I hate it when people travel to scenic locations and leave a mark by littering. Wherever I am, I make it a point to drop the trash at the nearest dustbin.
  5. I am in the process of making the switch to organic cleaning agents that don’t have any adverse effect on the environment.
  6. At work, we ensure that most processes are converted to paperless mode, one-sided sheets don’t go to waste and of course, reduce mistakes while taking a print.
  7. At home, we ensure that, as far as possible, the appliances in our home are energy efficient. We also unplug all unused devices.
  8. I would give a free (often unsolicited) lecture on all of the above points to friends, family, and anyone who would listen when I see them acting like potential eco-terrorists.
  9. I don’t use disposable plastic dishes or containers. Washable, reusable dishes and containers are much better.
  10. I prefer washable and reusable washcloths over disposable paper towels or napkins and handkerchiefs over tissues. This can surely reduce the amount of waste being generated.

There are still so many things that I can do to save the environment. Hopefully, by next year, my list will grow a little more longer.

We only have one home. Let’s save it before it’s too late. This is a topic that needs urgent attention and immediate action. Let’s act before we have to resort to desperate measures.
